Single Action Shooting Society

If it ain’t fun, it ain’t worth doing

History of Cowtown SASS

The Cowboy Shooters of Cowtown Range are an important part of the Cowtown story.  In fact, without them we probably wouldn’t be the range we are today.

As you learned in the “About Cowtown” tab of our website, some of the many matches that we host includes a variety of multigun fast draw matches operated by the Cowtown Cowboy Shooters Association.  These matches are completely unique and feature firearms typical of those used in the taming of the Old West.  This style of shooting is commonly referred to as “Cowboy Action Shooting” and participants are required to have a registered western “handle” name and dress in appropriate era costumes!  Our Cowboy Action Shooters operate a separate membership-based club on our property and, absent a standard range membership, they shoot only in their mock-up western town area on the south end of our property.

The Cowtown Cowboy Shooters club was established in 1982 during the founding days of Cowtown when it was known as “A Day in the West” and hosted western events, Civil War reenactments, and staged gunfighting.  One day in 1982, some of the regulars at “A Day in the West” got together and formed one of the first Cowboy Action Shooting clubs in the country, right here at Cowtown.  The new club established safety rules and match protocols which were later adopted by the Single Action Shooting Society, one of the primary sanctioning organizations in the world for Cowboy Action Shooting.

Today, Gail Snow operates the club and she’s one of best cowboy shooter’s in the country.  Her husband, Don Snow, was one of the founder’s of the club and, following his passing, Gail took over operations in 2000.  Gail runs an awesome club and outstanding matches, and is a firm believer in one of Don’s favorite sayings… “If it ain’t fun, it ain’t worth doin’!”  For information on how to become a member of the Cowtown Cowboy Shooters, please visit their website at www.ccsa-az.com.

Cowtown Range thanks Don and Gail Snow for getting it all started at Cowtown – and for their tireless efforts, relentless professionalism and incredible safety record.
